Every child is different. So the sleep patterns of newborn babies are also different. Some may take a day-long nap while some may take quick naps.   1. Birth To three Months- the newborn babies sleep for almost 18hrs. They sleep for a short time as they need to be fed and changed regularly. The parents are advised to play with them during the day and keep them awake in the daytime as much as possible.
  2. Three to six months- at this age the baby understands the difference between light and dark. They tend to take long naps during the day of almost 2hrs each. They sleep for almost 15hrs in total in a day. Their night sleeps are also longer than before. But they still wake up at least once during the night.
  3. Six to twelve months- at this age the baby starts sleeping mostly like an adult. They sleep for almost 13hrs in total in a day. They sleep for almost 11hrs at night. The babies wake up less frequently at this age.

Guide For New Parents

1. Making the babies a part of your daily routines is a good option. The babies adapt more quickly to 24 hrs. day and night cycle if the parents involve the newborn in their daily activities

2. When the baby wakes at night try to make less noise and avoid carrying the baby around. This stops the baby from waking all the way up. This will help the baby to learn that night time is to sleep.

3. Expose the newborn to daylight. This helps them to adapt the 24 hrs cycle more quickly. If babies are exposed to more sunlight during the day they sleep more during the night. Try and take the child outdoor for some time.

4. A recent experiment has proved that the mothers who massage their child with lotion at bedtime experience better newborn sleep thus the mother can also take a better good night sleep.

5. Newborns will sleep better with a full stomach it is advisable to massage the child first and then feed him properly before putting to sleep. This will give the parents and the newborn a better sleep at night.
