What Are The Signs Of Insomnia?

Insomnia is a very common disease in today’s world. Those who suffer from it are unable to sleep for days on end. No matter how tired or exhausted they are, they suffer from an inability to fall asleep. Approximately 30-40% of adults today suffer from insomnia. However, it can be treated at an early stage if one can detect the recurring signs of insomnia.

Insomnia may lead to numerous body as well as neurological problems. Our bodies need proper, unbroken night’s sleep to function properly. Insomnia, once acute, can cut down on normal functioning and sometimes can’t be treated. However, if detected early on, then insomnia stands a chance to be cured. These signs that set in very early on can help one identify the setting in of insomnia.

No Onset Of Sleep

One of the earliest signs of insomnia is an inability to fall asleep. While this process takes longer for some of us when compared to others, sleep usually sets in within an hour or two of us laying down in bed. However, people suffering from insomnia are unable to fall asleep for three to four hours after lying down. Therefore, even if they go to bed on time, they are unable to get the required amount of sleep.

Constant Breaking Of Sleep

This is also one of the important signs of insomnia. Towards the earlier stages, even if they do fall asleep, people with insomnia often keep waking up every couple of hours. What’s worse is that they are unable to go back to sleep after that. This, therefore, prevents them from having a long and unbroken sleep which can then interfere in the proper functioning of their brain.

Depression: Prominent Signs Of Insomnia

People who suffer from insomnia are often characterized by their constant irritability. They may snap at the littlest of things or may experience a severe disinterest in the activities of daily life. They also experience bouts of anxiety followed by prolonged periods of depression. These are very early signs of insomnia and one must be taken to the doctor when such symptoms surface.

No Concentration And Loss Of Memory

People suffering from insomnia also suffer from memory loss because a good night’s sleep is the key to memory consolidation. However, such people are not only unable to remember things but also find it difficult to concentrate. They may zone out completely and nothing might register in their brains. Alternatively, they may also have a very short span of attention and may keep phasing in and out of a conversation. Blank stares and/or constant fidgety movements are key signs of insomnia. It is common knowledge that all of us at some point in time, experience difficulty in falling asleep. It may be due to stress or due to some recurrent problem or other kinds of thoughts that prevent our mind from slowing down and switching off to sleep.
